Asia Cement inaugurates its “Waste Heat Recovery and Power Generation Plant”, a 1.3 billion Baht project to produce 150 million kWh per year to reduce greenhouse emissions
During an event held in the Pukrang Plant with the participation of authorities, community representatives and employees, Asia Cement Plc. has formally inaugurated its “Waste Heat Recovery and Power Generation Plant” a state of art electrical power generating plant aiming to reduce the cement plant’s dependence on fossil fuels and to consequently reduce its greenhouse footprint while improving its efficiency.
The Company Co-Managing Directors, Mr. Nopadol Ramyarupa and Mr. Roberto Callieri, cut the ribbon, unveiling the Company’s latest achievement and providing the attendees some insights on the project characteristic about the electricity production using the residual heat generated from the clinker burning process. Instead of releasing this heat into the atmosphere, the hot gases are used to generate steam in the boilers which is in turn sent to a steam turbine which drives an electric generator that produces electricity.
This will help reduce energy costs in accordance with the principles of renewable energy while also minimizing the use of fossil fuels, a way to develop clean energy that can effectively help reducing greenhouse emissions.
In numbers, this 21 Mw power plant can produce 150 million kWh per year without using fossil fuels implying a Carbon dioxide production decrease by 120,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to re-plantation of a land of 150,000 rai.
In the frame of the current robust growth of the Thai cement market, Asia Cement confirms its commitment to being a supplier of innovative and sustainable solution for the construction industry and, after the recent i.nova branding launch, the Company is now confirming moving on with another important milestone in the field of Sustainable Development.
While the Thai market remains the key focus of the Company, export activities are mainly concentrated on Myanmar and Cambodia. The Waste Heat Recovery and Power Generation Plant has opened its doors to welcome villagers, students, teachers, lecturers, civil service of Pukrang and Khao Wong sub-districts on at least 50 occasions during the recent months.
